Flexible Attention to Labels and Appearances in Early Induction
نویسندگان
چکیده
Young children have been demonstrated to rely on both labeling and appearance information when performing induction. According to some accounts, labels are more conceptually important than appearances. According to others, reliance on labels and appearances stems from a lowlevel attentional mechanism. The latter, but not the former, predicts flexible attentional shifts in reliance on labels or appearances. Results of the two reported experiments indicate that attention to labels and appearances can be flexibly modified through associative training, thus supporting the latter, but not the former account.

The role of verbal labels on flexible memory retrieval at 12-months of age.
The provision of verbal labels enhances 12-month-old infants' memory flexibility across a form change in a puppet imitation task (Herbert, 2011), although the mechanisms for this effect remain unclear. Here we investigate whether verbal labels can scaffold flexible memory retrieval when task difficulty increases and consider the mechanism responsible for the effect of language cues on early mem...
متن کاملEffects of Category Labels on Induction and Visual Processing: Support or Interference?
Linguistic labels have been demonstrated to promote inductive generalizations even early in development, however, the mechanism by which labels contribute to induction remains unknown. According to one theoretical position, even young children, realize that labels denote categories. Therefore, labels enable categorization of presented entities, and thus contribute to category-based induction. A...

Four studies examined whether Israeli 5-year-olds (N = 88) and adults (N = 48) drew inferences about psychological properties based on a character's social category, personality trait, or physical appearance trait. Study 1 revealed that while children drew inferences mostly by social category, adults did it by personality trait. Study 2 showed that the children's pattern was not due to how the ...
متن کاملExploring the role of verbal category labels in flexible cognition
Research under the paradigm of the label feedback hypothesis has proposed a causal role for verbal labels in the online learning and processing of categories. Labeled categories are learned faster, and are subsequently more robust. The present study extends this research paradigm by considering the relationship between verbal labels and flexible categorization. Flexibility is a key trait of hum...
